Istria County covers most of the Istrian peninsula in north-western Croatia – from the indented west coast with Umag, Novigrad, Poreč and Rovinj, through Pula in the south, to the rolling hills of the interior with Pazin, Motovun and Grožnjan.
The county is made up of 41 local authorities: 10 towns (Pula, Poreč, Rovinj, Umag, Novigrad, Labin, Pazin, Buzet, Buje and Vodnjan) and 31 municipalities. According to the 2021 census, about 195,800 people live here. Pazin is the county seat, while Pula is the largest city and the region's economic, university and healthcare centre. Istria is officially bilingual, with Italian used alongside Croatian.
What sets Istria apart is how closely the coast and the countryside sit together: Motovun or Pazin are only about thirty minutes' drive from the sea. The Istrian Y motorway (A8 and A9) connects all the main towns, the Učka tunnel leads to Rijeka and Zagreb, and Pula Airport plus the short drive to Trieste and Ljubljana make Istria easy to reach from neighbouring countries.
